The Client Challenge: High Costs and Low Control

A Southern California general contractor and real estate developer needed a cost-effective and secure way to manage the extensive paper archives required for their numerous building projects. With the storage of information and records being a multi-billion dollar business, the client was facing two major issues:

  1. Exorbitant Outsourcing Costs: The reliance on third-party document storage companies meant ongoing expenses and costly document retrieval fees.
  2. Security and Accessibility: Like many financial and legal operations, the client sought a higher level of security and immediate control over their valuable records.

The developer identified a tight, underutilized space, the bottom level of a three-story corporate parking garage, as a potential solution. This presented a unique engineering challenge: the space was constrained, difficult to access for installation, and riddled with underground pipes.

WPSS, in partnership with the client’s storage solutions provider, designed and executed a highly customized, high-density records storage system that solved the space and cost problems simultaneously. The solution centered on maximizing Vertical Space within the limited 600-square-foot footprint.

  • RiveTier Foundation: We utilized our RiveTier Boltless Shelving which is renowned for its strength and easy, tool-free assembly (only a rubber mallet is needed) to form the structural skeleton for the Multilevel Systems.
  • High-Density Design: The final installation was a two-level, double-deck system providing 1,200 linear feet of open shelving, enough capacity for over 1,000 boxes of documents.
  • Catwalk System & Accessibility: Integrated Catwalk System pathways and stairs were included to ensure safe, efficient, and immediate access to documents on both the ground level and the second tier.
  • Custom Security Features: To meet compliance requirements and protect the loose files, WPSS engineered custom flat Backers and fixed Book Ends to prevent documents from being pushed off the back or sides of the shelves.
  • Overcoming Installation Obstacles: The project required precise engineering to design the system around numerous existing underground pipes. The install crew successfully navigated the tight logistics, including unloading materials on a busy street and driving them three levels down into the parking facility.
